MURIC mounts pressure on Tinubu over INEC Chairman

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately remove the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following allegations that he authored a controversial document describing what he termed the “genocide of Christians” in Nigeria.

MURIC, a prominent Islamic advocacy group, said the alleged publication has raised serious concerns about neutrality and public trust in the leadership of the electoral body.

According to the group, the INEC chairman reportedly wrote an 80-page document in which he claimed that Christians were facing systematic killings in Nigeria.

MURIC argued that such a position could deepen religious divisions in the country and undermine the credibility expected of the head of the nation’s electoral commission.

Recall that in a statement issued by the organisation, MURIC maintained that the head of a sensitive national institution like INEC must remain strictly neutral and avoid actions capable of portraying bias or inflaming sectarian tensions.

The group further warned that allowing the INEC chairman to remain in office despite the allegations could damage public confidence in the commission, particularly as the country prepares for future elections.

MURIC therefore urged President Tinubu to take swift action by investigating the matter and, if the allegations are confirmed, relieve the INEC chairman of his duties in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
