Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked a community in Kaduna State, killing one resident and abducting seven others in the early hours of Monday.
The attack occurred in Sabon Gyero, a settlement within Millennium City in Chikun Local Government Area, where residents said the assailants stormed the neighbourhood in large numbers while most people were still asleep.
Sources in the area said the attackers invaded a house and whisked away three women and four children before fleeing into nearby bushes.
During the raid, the gunmen also attacked a phone charging centre where they shot and killed a young man, Abdullahi Lawal, popularly known in the community as “Kurma.”
Residents said Lawal, who was deaf and non-verbal, suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the incident. He was rushed to a hospital but died before reaching the facility.
The attackers were also said to have carted away several mobile phones and laptops from the charging centre before escaping from the area.
Reacting to the incident, the Commandant of the Joint Task Force in the area, Uwaisu Yunusa, said security operatives moved to the scene after hearing gunshots but the assailants had already fled before their arrival.
