Sokoto adopts new teachers’ nanual to boost classroom performance

By Muhammad Nasir

The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with Plan International Nigeria, on Thursday adopted an onboarding and orientation manual for newly recruited teachers in the state.

The adoption followed a stakeholders’ meeting convened to review and adapt the document in line with the outcomes of the Abuja education roundtable and the revised Teachers Training Guide.

Speaking during the adoption of the manual, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ala, said the document would strengthen the capacity of the state’s education system and enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in schools.

According to him, the manual covers various aspects and techniques of modern teaching and learning practices aimed at improving classroom performance.

“This document encompasses all aspects and techniques of teaching and learning in schools.

“As we are all aware, the state government recently recruited new teachers to address existing gaps in our learning environment and ensure that our children receive the quality education they deserve.

“However, having the required number of teachers without adequately equipping and training them will not enable us to achieve the desired standards in our educational system.

“Therefore, this important document has been developed to ensure improved standards of teaching and learning across the state,” Ala said.

The commissioner added that the administration of Gov. Ahmad Aliyu has continued to prioritise education under its nine-point Smart Agenda.

He said the Initiative reflects the government’s commitment to securing a brighter future for children and the overall development of the state.

Earlier, the Project Coordinator of Plan International Nigeria, Mr Joseph Julius, described the review of the manual as a strategic effort aimed at producing a practical document that would support effective learning across schools in the state.

“As you know, education remains at the centre of Plan International’s programmes, with a strong focus on promoting quality learning outcomes.

“We are implementing this initiative in partnership with the government, and following the review, the manual will be deployed to support the successful implementation of the teaching and learning process,” he said.

Julius further explained that the meeting was aimed at strengthening the capacity of education stakeholders to implement a standardised and context-responsive onboarding process for newly recruited teachers in the state.
