Sokoto govt. trains livestock farmers on artificial insemination technology

The Sokoto State Government has commenced the training of livestock farmers on modern artificial insemination (AI) technology as part of efforts to improve livestock breeding, increase productivity and boost farmers’ incomes.
The awareness and training programme is being implemented by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project in collaboration with the Muryar Fulani Peace Initiatives Network across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Speaking at the inauguration of the campaign in Sokoto on Monday, the State L-PRES Project Coordinator, Mr Sirajo Abubakar, said the initiative was aimed at creating awareness and expanding the adoption of artificial insemination technology among livestock farmers.
Represented by the project’s Animal Husbandry Officer, Mr Kabiru Yusuf, Abubakar said the programme would sensitise livestock farmers and other stakeholders to the benefits of modern breeding techniques for improved animal production and economic growth.
“This campaign is aimed at sensitising livestock farmers and other stakeholders on the artificial insemination programme to enhance their animal production systems and improve their economic well-being.
“At the end of the campaign, participants are expected to return to their respective senatorial zones to carry out community sensitisation so that more livestock farmers can benefit from the initiative,” he said.
Abubakar disclosed that the L-PRES Project had established a modern Artificial Insemination Centre at Runjin Sambo to improve livestock productivity and provide quality breeding services to farmers across the state.
He urged livestock farmers to take advantage of the facility to improve the quality and productivity of their animals.
The coordinator also encouraged participants to pay close attention during the training to enable them to effectively disseminate the knowledge gained within their communities.
In her presentation, Dr. Asma’u Bashar of the Muryar Fulani Peace Initiatives Network described the artificial insemination programme as a major step towards modernising livestock production in Sokoto state.
Bashar commended the Sokoto State Government and the L-PRES Project for promoting livestock development through modern technologies.
According to her, wider adoption of artificial insemination will enhance livestock productivity, encourage commercial livestock production and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the state.
