A survivor of violent attacks in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, Kelechi Ezinwoke, has recounted the loss of 12 relatives and the destruction of his family property in a documentary highlighting the human impact of insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East.
The documentary, produced by the Igbo Integration Movement (I-MOVE), features Ezinwoke alleging that the attacks were carried out by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Among his claims, Ezinwoke alleged that some of the bodies of his slain relatives were used to prepare egusi soup, describing it as one of the most traumatic experiences of his life.
The allegation has not been independently verified. IPOB has consistently denied involvement in such atrocities and has rejected similar allegations in the past.
Ezinwoke also alleged that his ancestral home was razed and his mother’s shop destroyed during the attacks, leaving his family displaced and devastated.
He said the violence had brought suffering rather than the liberation sought by proponents of Biafra agitation.
The documentary has generated mixed reactions, with many expressing sympathy for the survivor, while some supporters of the separatist movement dismissed his account as false.
The account has renewed calls from some groups for a thorough investigation into allegations of human rights abuses and violence committed by all parties involved in the conflict.
Observers say the protracted insecurity in parts of the South-East has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, displacement of residents and disruption of economic activities, with civilians bearing the greatest burden.
They stressed the need for impartial investigations, justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators, while urging all parties to avoid actions or rhetoric capable of worsening tensions in the region.
The report was attributed to the Stop Genocide Action Group, which called for greater attention to the plight of victims and a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
