ADC has over 200 million supporters, APC left with 30 governors – Activist

Rights activist and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Aisha Yesufu, has claimed that the party enjoys the support of over 200 million Nigerians despite the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, controlling the majority of state governments.

Mrs Yesufu made the assertion on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

Reacting to the recent wave of defections by some politicians and governors to the ruling party, she dismissed suggestions that such moves weaken the opposition.

According to her, although the APC may have financial advantage due to its control of government resources, it lacks the level of public support and passion enjoyed by the ADC.

“The ADC is not mincing words that when it comes to money, the APC can outspend the ADC. Definitely they can outspend us because they have our coffers, our national wealth, at their disposal to do whatever it is that they’re going to do with it,” she said.

She, however, insisted that the ruling party cannot match the commitment and enthusiasm of Nigerians who support the ADC.

“The one thing that I can tell you is they cannot outpassion us,” she added.

Mrs Yesufu further argued that while the APC currently controls about 30 state governors, the ADC draws strength from the broader Nigerian population.

“They have 30 governors, but we have over 200 million Nigerians, minus the 30 governors and a few of the supporters that they have,” she said.

Her comments come amid ongoing political realignments and growing debates over the strength of opposition parties ahead of future electoral contests in the country.
