Eid-el-Fitr: FFS urges fire safety compliance amid heatwave in Kano

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Kano Command, has urged residents of Kano State to adhere strictly to fire safety measures as Eid-el-Fitr celebration approaches amid intense heat conditions.

The State Controller,  Mr Kazeem Sholadoye, disclosed this in a statement signed by the service’s Public Relations Officer, Al-Hassan Kantin, on Tuesday in Kano.

According to the statement,” the rising incidence of fire outbreaks in the state, attribute partly to prevailing high temperatures.

“Combination of festive activities and extreme heat can increase risk of fire incidents, leading to loss of lives and property if adequate precautions were not taken”,he said in the statement.

The controller advise residents to avoid overloading electrical sockets, switch off appliances when not in use, and ensure proper handling of cooking activities, particularly during the festive period.

He further explained that there is need for proper storage of flammable materials such as petrol, kerosene and gas cylinders in a safe place, urge residents to keep them away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

“Homes, shops and event centres should have functional fire extinguishers and faulty electrical installations must be inspected by qualified electricians.

“Bush burning and use of open flames, especially during dry and windy season must be minimize and parents, guardians should supervise children and prevent them from playing with matches, lighters or other flammable materials”,he said.

The controller also emphasised importance of keeping access routes clear for emergency responders, particularly in markets and crowded areas.

Sholadoye assured general public of the command’s readiness to respond to emergencies, noting that firefighters had been placed on high alert throughout the festive period.

He also called on community leaders, market associations and event organisers to cooperate with fire safety officials to ensure a safe and hitch-free Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
