The new Commissioner of Police (CP), Jigawa Command, Mr Haruna Yahaya, has pledged to adopt a firm stance against all forms of crimes, including armed robbery, cattle rustling, drug trafficking, vandalism and other heinous crimes in the state.
Yahaya, who made the promise during his maiden press briefing in Dutse on Monday, also assured residents of the state of his commitment to enhance security in all parts of the state.
“Today’s engagement is not merely to inform, but to clearly articulate our policing vision, our operational priorities and the pathway through which we intend to enhance security across Jigawa state.
“Our goal is clear; to create a secure, stable and crime-resillience Jigawa state where law abiding citizens can live and conduct their lawful activities without fear, but a hostile environment for those who criminally inclined and seeking to disrupt our peace,” Yahaya said.
He explained that the command, under his steawarship will focus on strengthening intelligence-led policing, including strengthening collaboration with sister security agencies and leveraging community-based intelligence that is timely reliable and adoptable to preempt crime before it occurs.
The CP added that the command will deepen community engagement in order enhance community policing and trust, saying the police cannot succeed without the trust and cooperation of the people.
“We will deepen community engagement through regular consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders. Our goal is to build mutual trust, transparency, and accountability.
According to him, his leadership will also focus on professionalism, discipline, accountability and respect for human rights.
“We shall uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights. Officers and men will be held accountable for their actions and inactions. Any form of misconduct will be decisively addressed.
“In the area of rapid response and visibility,
we will enhance patrols, strategic deployment of personnel and rapid response to distress calls. Our presence will be felt across all communities to deter criminal activities and reassure the public,” the CP said.
Yahaya further stated that recognizing that a motivated workforce is essential for effective policing, the command will prioritize continuous training, retraining and the welfare officers and men to improve service delivery.
He added that his leadership will sustain close coordination with sister security agencies to ensure unified and effective responses to security threats, saying that the command will prioritize early detection, disruption and prevention of identified key threats in the state, such as cattle rustling, vandalism, drug abuse and motorcycle snatching and armed robbery.
The CP said the police will focus on dismantling networks, securing rural corridors, and strengthening intelligence within grazing and transit routes in order to check cattle rustling.
On vandalism, Yahaya said the command’s emphasis will be on protecting critical infrastructure through surveillance, community reporting systems and targeted patrols, while drug abuse will be addressed not only through enforcement, but also through preventive sensitization, particularly targeting youth and vulnerable groups.
In the area of motorcycle snatching and armed robbery, he said the command will intensify visibility policing, strengthen stop-and-search operations within legal frameworks and disrupt criminal mobility across the state.
“These are not just challenges—we are treating them as priority operational fronts requiring deliberate, sustained and intelligence-backed action.
“To achieve these goals, the command will:strengthen operational frameworks at the area commands and divisional levels, deploy modern policing techniques and technology where available, enhance synergy with local vigilante groups and other community-based security outfits., establish feedback mechanisms to enable the public report crimes and provide useful information and onduct periodic assessments of our strategies to ensure effectiveness and adaptability,” he added.
The CP, who called for public support, emphasized that security is a collective responsibility and urge all residents of state to support the police and other security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
Yahaya also assured residents of the state that the command will remain committed to fairness, justice, and the rule of law, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining law and order and ensuring that the state remains peaceful and secure.
“Together, we can build a safer and more secure environment for all”, the CP added.
