21-year-old bags 6 months imprisonment for stealing generating set

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan, on Wednesday, sentenced one Gbolahan Damilare, 21, to six months in the correctional centre for stealing a power generating set valued at N50,000.

Delivering judgment, the Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Latunji convicted and sentenced Damilare following his guilty plea and the overwhelming evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.

Latunji said that because the convict did not waste the time of the court before pleading guilty and was a first time offender, the sentence to be imposed would be light.

She however, warned that stiffer punishment would be imposed on Damilare if he refused to turn a new leaf after completing his jail term.

“To serve as deterrent to others, Damilare is sentenced to six months imprisonment or an option of N50,000,” the Magistrate held.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Oluseye Akinola, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on Dec. 18 at No. 11 Adewumi St, Felele area, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Shedding more light on the matter, Akinola stated that Damilare was caught after jumping over the fence into the compound of Mr and Mrs Tosin Ojo to steal their generating set.

The prosecutor further said that Mrs Ojo sighted the convict disconnecting the cable on the generator and carting it away before she shouted for help.
