Amnesty Int’l demands investigation over Port Harcourt killings

The Nigerian authorities must investigate the recent crisis that lead to protests against northerners and the destruction of goods and means of livelihood worth hundreds of millions of naira in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, over the killing of a person at Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The International human rights body which announced this on its verified Facebook page, said the incident which happened on 10 February had left many injured and traumatised.

“The ease with which people are killed or attacked for their identity should be a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to ensure accountability for every violation of human rights.

“It is not enough for the government to make pronouncements or issue condemnations, it is vital that those responsible are held to account through a due process of law.

“This is the only way to start to tame such waves of violence that may have wider repercussions,” it said.
