Former Kano State Governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
The former Senator, cited the need for strategic political realignment in the country as part of his reasons to leave the party.
In a press statement issued on March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members for the opportunity to serve as the party’s National Leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
He described the decision to leave the party as difficult but necessary in view of the current political developments in Nigeria.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he stated. “As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.”
Kwankwaso explained that the decision was informed by the evolving dynamics of the nation’s political landscape, which he said requires a new strategic alignment with a political platform capable of offering better prospects for national transformation.
According to him, identifying with another platform would provide the opportunity to effectively contribute to efforts aimed at changing the direction of the country.
The former governor also expressed gratitude to the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees and the National Executive Committee for their support during his time in the party.
He further acknowledged party leaders at all levels — from ward to state — including members and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, for their dedication and commitment to the party’s ideals.
Kwankwaso assured that despite his resignation from the NNPP, he remains committed to working with political stakeholders and supporters toward building a better and more prosperous Nigeria.
He added that collaboration among like-minded Nigerians remains crucial to charting a new course for the country’s development and democratic progress.
