The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State is weighing the option of conducting consensus congresses ahead of its upcoming national convention.
At an expanded leadership meeting held Tuesday in Katsina, stakeholders across the state deliberated on the party’s preparations for the convention and spoke on the possibility of adopting a consensus arrangement for the forthcoming congresses as a strategy to ensure harmony within the party.
Speaking to journalists, a chieftain of the party, Mustapha Inuwa, said that the congresses will commence on April 9, beginning from the polling unit level, progressing through the wards, local government areas and the state level.
According to him, the meeting was convened primarily to brief stakeholders on the congress timetable and to deliberate on the growing calls within the party for a consensus arrangement.
Inuwa noted that the opposition party is well positioned to adopt consensus, especially at a time when even ruling parties struggle to conduct direct primaries.
“Considering the demands, we think we can go for consensus because if a sitting government cannot hold direct primaries, I believe the opposition is in a better position to go for that.”
He urged party members to remain calm, united and focused on strengthening the party ahead of the congresses, stressing that the process would remain open to any aspirant who wishes to contest.
Inuwa also lamented the economic policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which he said has brought hardship.
He said that the ADC would prioritise security, economic recovery, agriculture and education if given the opportunity to govern.
He said the party would also pursue anti-corruption efforts through lawful and transparent processes.
