Katsina NUJ advocates stronger measures to protect Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, has raised serious concern over escalating threats to press freedom.

The union warned that persistent attacks on journalists constitute a significant threat to the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.

This is contained in a statement marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, jointly signed by Chairman, Aminu Garba-Dandagoro, and Secretary, Abbas Bamalli respectively.

The Council reaffirmed that a free press remains the backbone of accountability and good governance.

The NUJ stressed that any attempt to silence journalists undermines the nation’s democratic foundations.

The union further decried growing cases of harassment, intimidation, and interference faced by journalists in the line of duty.

NUJ added that such actions not only erode public trust but also weaken key democratic institutions.

The Council emphasised that journalists must be allowed to operate freely and safely, without fear or favour, in line with the constitution and professional ethics.

It called on government authorities, security agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to uphold and protect the rights of media practitioners across the country.
